‘Substitute’ relays the story of the alienated modern man looking for substitutes for the things he is missing in life. The film remains a Croatian classic and hallmark of the famous Zagreb School of Animation and was the first Croatian film ever to win an Oscar. It is also the first time the award was given to an animated film not from the United States of America. Note: the director, Dušan Vukotić, didn’t even travel to the awards ceremony in 1963 because he thought he had no chance of winning.
