The Melon Route (Put lubenica)

Saturday 7th November, 9.30pm

Branko Schmidt, 89 mins, Croatia, 2006, 35mm, Croatian/Mandarin (English subtitles), 18+

The Melon Route is a human trafficking pathway en route to western Europe, and the film tells the true story of twelve illegal migrants who drown in a river on the Bosnian/Croatian border. The story is told through the eyes of a Chinese woman and her relationship with a war veteran who suffers from PTSD. The language and cultural barriers between the main characters emphasise the underlying truth that place of birth is luggage we can never be free of. Croatia’s best line up of actors and a narrative, dealing with a problem so prevalent in that part of Europe makes ‘The Melon Route’ a film that must be seen.

Some of the awards won by this film include:

Dubrovnik International Film Festival, 2006 – Best Feature Film

Pula Film Festival 2006 – Leading Male Role (Krešimir Mikić)
